Suspect dies after swallowing drugs during sting, BSO reports

Detectives: 38-year-old suspect was delivering methamphetamine in Oakland Park Monday

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – A suspect who was targeted in an undercover narcotics operation died after swallowing methamphetamine during a drug transaction, the Broward Sheriff's Office reports.

The undercover sting happened Wednesday in the area of East Oakland Park Boulevard and Northeast 32nd Street in Oakland Park.

According to detectives with the Broward Country Drug Task Force, the 38-year-old man from Miami swallowed the drugs when he saw detectives moving in to arrest him.

Detectives said the man was at the location to drop off the drugs. They said detectives tried to stop the suspect from ingesting the drugs, but they were too late to do so.

The suspect was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he went into cardiac arrest and died.

Detectives are investigating the death and have taken statements from law enforcement officials, as well as civilian witnesses.
