PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – A suspected car thief was apparently so desperate not to be identified that he tried to chew off his own fingerprints, authorities in southwest Florida said.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office posted surveillance video of the incident on its Facebook page Friday.
According to the post, deputies stopped a stolen 2015 Mercedes-Benz last week. They discovered that the driver, Kenzo Roberts, 20, had a fake ID, a concealed firearm and three fraudulent credit cards.
While Roberts was detained in the back of a patrol vehicle, the video shows him chewing his fingertips and rubbing them against the cage.
Despite his efforts, a fingerprint scanner identified Roberts and showed that he was wanted in Broward County on two felony arrest warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, deputies said.
Roberts was arrested on multiple charges, including grand theft auto.
Detectives contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection and learned that Roberts was in the country illegally.
