MIAMI – Miami police are searching for the driver involved in a hit-and-run that left an 18-year old girl fighting for her life.
Meanwhile, Local 10 News has obtained video taken minutes after the accident off Northwest 54th Street and 13th Avenue in Miami. Area surveillance cameras were also rolling on all the cars traveling toward and away from the scene.
Relatives of Dericka Banks told Local 10 News that her parents are the only ones allowed in her hospital room. They said doctors do not want the teen to get excited or overwhelmed, adding that the teen is facing a long road to recovery.
According to her family, Banks has broken bones in her arm and leg, head trauma and lung damage after she was struck in the street while walking home Saturday night about 9:30 p.m.
"Be my daughter again," said Veronica Banks, the teen's mom. "Be my child. Be there. Come on. Wake up. Do something."
Veronica Banks said her daughter has yet to open her eyes.
The teen was struck while crossing Northwest 54th Street near 13th Avenue. She was walking with her boyfriend, who witnessed the crash.
"It was like a boom," boyfriend Satchal Rivers said. "It was real loud, and when I looked back she was in front of the car."
Witnesses said the car never tried to stop.
Dericka Banks remains at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The vehicle is described by witnesses as a champagne-color SUV with extensive damage or no bumper at all on the front.
Police are still questioning several witnesses and expect to release more information and a better description in the coming days.
"It shouldn't happen to no one's child," said Veronica Banks. "My daughter is going to come out of this. I want the one who did this to come forth."
