DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A Tesla triumph has recently been announced. It turns out the car company's flagship car is the safest car to be tested -- ever.
No engine, no problem for the Tesla Model S. The super luxury, battery powered sedan is racing its way to the top of almost every list in the electric car market.
"We're really looking to be superlative in every single class, not just one," said Graham Carroll, Tesla Regional Manager.
Carroll says South Florida car lovers are buying up the Model S almost as fast as the company can make them. There are currently a few in stock, but orders are taking six weeks to fill.
"It's a combination of things that were previously contrary," Carroll said. "You have performance, you have the green element, you have the high tech factor and its also a luxury car."
And you can now add safety to the list of things that Tesla is tops in. The sedan just scored the highest safety rating of any car ever tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration -- front end and side impact. Part of the reason is because there's no engine, no gas tan and no drive train.
"The rest of this cavity is braced with a series of structures, extrusions and aluminum castings which are traditionally much stronger than a regular frame," Carroll said.
The crumple zone is five times longer than a traditional car. The model S weighs 4,000 pounds and it's not light on bells and whistles either.
The sedan has a giant iPad-like control panel, retractable door handles and fine leather interior.
The Model S is definitely a luxury sedan, but its big on performance too. It'll can go 0-60 in under four seconds.
If you hadn't already guessed, the Tesla is tops in price too. The nicely equipped Model S will cost you around $90,000.
