Toddler dies after being found unresponsive

Broward Sheriff's Office now investigating

OAKLAND PARK – A 2-year-old boy died at the hospital Thursday morning after he was found unresponsive at a home in Oakland Park.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies received a call about 1:30 a.m. that Amari Francis' mother took him to Florida Medical Center, where he died.

Homicide and crime scene detectives arrived at the family's Bridgewater Place apartment at 2750 NW 44th St. to conduct a death investigation.

Neighbors were shocked by the news.

"I can only imagine what that mom is feeling, I feel terrible for her," said Marie Cruz, who is a neighbor of the family. "I hope it was an accident and not in her hands."

Detectives said Amari's body was taken to the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. There were no obvious signs of trauma. Toxicology tests are pending to determine the cause of death.
