UM athletic trainer helps girl choking on quarter

Brittney Ferrell credited with saving girl's life

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – While at a tournament in Oklahoma, an athletic trainer for the University of Miami volleyball team helped save a girl's life after she swallowed a quarter.

During a match, trainer Brittney Ferrell saw a woman running down the bleachers with a toddler in her arms.

"All of the sudden, there was a commotion in the stands," she said. "To be honest, I didn't really think."

Players said the woman was screaming.

"I figured I would try to go help as best I could," said Ferrell. "I went over, took her toddler -- the baby wasn't getting any air in or out, started to turn a little bit red."

Ferrell, who has received degrees in athletic training and sports medicine, performed CPR on the girl.

"I kind of flipped her, did two back blows. Luckily, the quarter came out," she said.
