Lucia Hernandez dies following hit-and-run crash

Woman struck while returning home from getting baby food for daughter

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A woman who was behind the wheel of her Toyota when she was struck in a hit-and-run crash Sept. 8 has died.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Sunday that Lucia Hernandez, 37, died at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

State troopers said they are now focusing their investigation on the man who was behind the wheel of the car that crashed into Hernandez at the intersection of Miami Gardens Drive and Northeast 18th Avenue.

"This young lady was on her way to Publix to get baby food for her daughter and on her way back home she ended up losing her life," FHP Trooper Joe Sanchez said.

Witnesses described the man, who hasn't been identified, as out of control, blowing through a red light before colliding with Hernandez.

Investigators said instead of helping Hernandez, who was ejected from her car, the man ran from the scene, so he could call his attorney.

That man now faces charges of vehicular homicide.
