South Florida drivers have a bad reputation. One insurance group actually rated Florida drivers as the sixth-worst in the nation. But one South Florida woman is taking her frustrations out on a whole new level.
Every day Katie Smith is armed with a homemade dashcam, to post videos on her own YouTube channel dedicated to all the bad drivers of South Florida.
Smith says she was inspired two years ago when she was cut off and nearly crashed.
“By the time I started to dial the phone to call the cops, he just sped off,” says Smith.
Ever since, she has been on a mission to educate. Local 10 checked, and her driving record is clean.
Local 10’s Janine Stanwood went for a ridealong and got schooled. She saw everything from jaywalkers, to folks ignoring the giant arrow showing a lane is closed.
There is actually a huge group of people out on YouTube that just post dashcam videos and Smith says she wanted to be part of it.
“I wanted to be a part of it because I know people always complain about South Florida Drivers,” says Smith.
The last time she checked, about 23,000 people had viewed her videos.
Dashcamming is growing in Europe and is almost ubiquitous in Russia to combat corruption.
Smith says it’s here, and she’s got the clicks to prove that people like to watch.
"There's been times where I could go almost an entire day with nothing and I'm thinking, ‘Oh good. People are starting to change,’ and then someone will do something and I'm like, ‘Oh no,’” says Smith.
