Would-be bank robber waits for deputies to arrive

Public defender says Steven Bynes wanted to go to jail because he had nowhere else to go

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A man who tried to rob a South Florida bank was arrested after he waited for deputies to arrive, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said the man, later identified as Steven Bynes, entered a Bank United branch on Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach and handed a teller a note implying he was there to rob the bank.

Barbera said employees fled the bank, but the suspect walked into the manager's office and waited until deputies asked him to come out. He complied and was taken into custody without incident.

A public defender claimed Bynes wanted to go to jail because he had nowhere else to go.
