San Antonio mayor, Miami-Dade mayor settle NBA Finals wager

Mayors roll up their sleeves for beautification project, serve Tex-Mex meals to injured U.S. Military Veterans

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez and San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro settled their friendly wager Wednesday following the Miami Heat's victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals series this past season.

Both mayors had agreed to participate in a City Year project in the hometown of the winning mayor, and on Wednesday, Mayor Castro flew into Miami to take part in a beautification project with City Year corps members at Kelsey L. Pharr Elementary School.

Following the project, city officials said Mayor Gimenez and Mayor Castro, together with chefs from San Antonio's famous Mi Tierra restaurant, prepared and served a Tex-Mex meal to U.S. military veterans and their families at the Fisher House, located at Miami VA Healthcare System.

"I'm grateful to Mayor Castro for taking the time to travel to Miami and for holding up his end of our friendly wager," said Mayor Gimenez. "As passionate as we both are about are hometown teams, this kind of community service is a good reminder for all of us that there are definitely more important things in life. It was a real privilege to lend a hand at Kelsey Pharr Elementary in Brownsville today and to serve lunch to our recovering military veterans at the VA Hospital."

The Miami Heat earned their third NBA Championship earlier this year by defeating the San Antonio Spurs.
