Move over Lingerie Football League -- there's a new skimpy sport coming to Miami.
The Miami Spice will participate in the newly formed Bikini Basketball Association. The league has seven teams so far, including the Hollywood Hotties, Chicago Desire, and New York Knockouts.
"It's a league that combines sexy and basketball and brings it to you as a form of entertainment," said league president A.J. McArthur, 26.
"If your daughter grows up to be a basketball player, would you let her do that?" Local 10's Neki Mohan asked McArthur, the father of a 6-month-old girl.
"I don't see why not," said McArthur.
The WNBA already exists but attracts little support. The latest attempt to spice up women's basketball has met some harsh scrutiny.
"For example, with volleyball, it is an Olympic sport and these women wear bikinis as well and there photos, I can't talk about their pictures," said McArthur.
The Miami Spice was supposed to hold tryouts at Miami Edison Senior High School over the weekend, but was nixed when word got to the Miami-Dade Public School Superintendent's office, who said the league didn't have permission to hold tryouts at the high school nor would the tryouts been approved.
"What do you say to people who say this sets women back?" asked Mohan.
"I say it doesn't set them back. I say it gives them more opportunities to give back to the community, make the athletes celebrities and to pretty much change people's lives," said McArthur.
The league is expected to begin playing in the summer of 2013.
