Miami Dolphins player Jonathon Amaya celebrated his birthday with a trip to jail after was he arrested early Monday on charges of simple battery.

The third-year safety was arrested after a cab driver claimed Amaya, 24, attempted to choke him when he refused to drive the player to his home in Broward County.

According to an arrest report, the incident began after the driver was flagged down outside Club Bamboo by Amaya, who celebrated his birthday on Sunday. Amaya had asked to be driven to Weston, but the driver responded by saying he didn't drive that far. Eventually, a trip was agreed to after Amaya gave the driver $100.

But once travel began, the driver said that Amaya become "aggressive." The driver then returned Amaya back to the area where he was flagged down, refunded his money and told Amaya to get out of the cab. It was at that point that Amaya become violent, wrapping his hands around the driver's neck and attempted to choke him, according to the police report.

Amaya, who has recorded just 6 tackles in 2012 and was not involved in a play during Sunday's Dolphins win over Seattle, was detained by two off-duty officers working as bouncers at Club Bamboo.

The driver suffered no injuries.

The Dolphins issued a statement, saying: “We are aware of the situation and are in the process of gathering information.”
