DAVIE, Fla. -

It's back to the drawing board for the Miami Dolphins in their search for a new head coach. Jeff Fisher has told the St. Louis Rams that he will accept their offer to return to the NFL sideline, leaving Miami with nothing to show in their pursuit of the former coach of the Tennessee Titans.

Fisher had told the Dolphins and Rams that he would choose between the two teams for his comeback destination, but the decision took considerably longer than either team had expected. St. Louis had brought in other head coaching candidates while waiting word from Fisher while the Dolphins did not.

Miami has been looking to fill the position left vacant when the team fired former coach Tony Sparano with three games remaining in the 2011 regular season.

The Dolphins issued a statment on Jeff Fisher:

“We did have conversations with Jeff Fisher about becoming the head coach of the Dolphins. As we said when we began this process, we have a plan in place to identify, evaluate, and select individuals who we believe would be strong candidates to be our head coach, and that process continues. We are excited about those people under consideration, and we are confident that the individual we eventually select will be the right person to lead this football team.”
