The Mountain West will split into divisions before the 2013 season and conduct a championship game for the first time, the conference announced Tuesday.

With 12 football schools next season after Boise State and San Diego State backed out of commitments to join the Big East, the Mountain West will have two six-team divisions, the Mountain and the West. The winners of the divisions will play in a conference title game on Dec. 7, 2013. The team with the highest BCS ranking will be the host.

The Mountain will include Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming. The West will consist of Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State and UNLV. The divisions were determined according to geography and rivalries.

Each team will play five divisional games and three opponents from the other division.

The conference also announced that there will not be a division setup for basketball.
