Hurricanes take South Florida showdown vs. FIU

UM baseball tops Panthers in NCAA tournament opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes and FIU Panthers hadn't met on the baseball diamond since 2008. Given the turnout for their Friday night showdown at Mark Light Field, fans may want to see them meet again sooner rather than later.

A sellout crowd watched the Hurricanes drop the Panthers 6-2 in their NCAA tournament opener at the Coral Gables regional.

Miami All-American David Thompson had RBI base hits in each of the first two innings to propel the 'Canes. It was the first sellout at Mark Light Field since the Hurricanes played Florida on March 3, 2012.

Next up for the 'Canes is Columbia on Saturday night. FIU will take on East Carolina in an elimination game Saturday afternoon.
