Dolphins ink OG Danny Watkins to one-year deal

Watkins, former '11 first-round draft pick, was released by Eagles

DAVIE, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins are hoping one team's bust becomes another team's treasure.

The Dolphins signed former Eagles first-round draft pick Danny Watkins to shore up Miami's offensive line. To make room for Watkins' arrival, the Dolphins released guard Josh Samuda.

Watkins, the No. 23 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, never developed into the force Philadelphia expected him to become at the guard position. A former firefighter, Watkins didn't start playing football until he was 22.

The Eagles released Watkins over the weekend with some saying he never had the desire or hunger to play professional football. Philadelphia newspapers said Watkins loved firefighting so much that he was a regular visitor to area fire stations and even went on calls with firemen.

Watkins will add depth to the Dolphins offensive line that only has rookie Dallas Thomas backing up starters John Jerry and Richie Icognito.
