Everett Golson says he will transfer to Florida State

Former Notre Dame quarterback can play for Seminoles immediately

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Everett Golson is headed to Florida State to finish his college football career.

The former Notre Dame quarterback will join the Seminoles as heir apparent to Jameis Winston, the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner who became the No. 1 overall selection in the NFL Draft.

Golson graduated from Notre Dame last weekend with one year of eligibility remaining and can play at another school immediately, under NCAA rules.

"After much thought and careful consideration, I will utilize my fifth year of eligibility to join the Florida State University Seminoles," Golson told FOX Sports. "To coach Jimbo Fisher, the Florida State football team, staff, alumni and fans, thank you for allowing me to become part of the Seminoles family. I can't wait to get started."

As a redshirt freshman three years ago, Golson led the Fighting Irish to an undefeated regular season and the national championship game, throwing for 2,405 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. He missed all of the 2013 season after being suspended for academic reasons, but he returned in 2014 and helped the Irish get off to a 6-0 start.

Notre Dame's first loss came in a last-second, 31-27 defeat by Florida State in Tallahassee. Golson threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns in the game.

Fisher has said that Golson won't be guaranteed the starting job, but he is likely to become the frontrunner after junior Sean Maguire -- the only other quarterback on the roster with experience -- failed to impress during the spring game.

Maguire was the Seminoles' most seasoned signal caller, passing for 304 yards and a touchdown in his lone start against Clemson last season.

Golson will challenge Maguire, sophomore John Franklin III, redshirt freshman J.J. Cosentino and true freshmen De'Andre Johnson and Deondre Francois.

Under Fisher, each of Florida State's starting quarterbacks -- Winston, E.J. Manuel and Christian Ponder -- have gone on to become first-round NFL draft picks.

Golson had been considering Alabama, South Carolina and UCLA, among other schools.
