FIU beats UAB to win first C-USA championship in baseball

Panthers punch ticket to NCAA tournament with 8-2 victory

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Florida International has punched its ticket to the NCAA baseball tournament.

The FIU baseball team defeated UAB, 8-2, in the Conference USA tournament championship game Sunday.

FIU (29-29) was led by Julius Gaines, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Austin Rodriguez, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

The Panthers hit .370 and scored 44 runs on 51 hits in four games of the tournament.

It was the first C-USA championship in school history for FIU.

The win guarantees the Panthers a spot in the NCAA tournament. The Blazers (33-25) could still make the tournament as an at-large selection.
