Manso: Loria has 'finally lost it'

Local 10 Sports Director Will Manso with the latest Marlins managerial news

MIAMI – Jeffrey Loria made the right move.  He fired manager Mike Redmond.

While some think it's crazy to fire a manager 38 games into the season, this team has been stuck in quicksand for far too long.

From blown saves, to bad base running, basic fundamental mistakes and the inability to get the big hit in key situations, the Marlins have found every which way to be mediocre.  Fair or unfair, that will always fall on the manager.

Kudos to Loria for recognizing a change and spark was needed.

Jeffrey Loria made the wrong move.  He hired his GM to manage, with no on-the-field managing or coaching experience.

Dan Jennings is a very intelligent baseball man.  He's well liked and respected within the organization and Major League Baseball.

Dan Jennings hasn't put on a baseball uniform since Ronald Reagan was President.

The last and only time he coached a baseball team was in a high school in Alabama in the mid-1980's.

I just turned 40 years old.  When Jennings last wore a baseball uniform I was in a catholic school uniform... in the 4th grade!

You get the point.

This move isn't so much out of the box, it's out of his mind.  As in Jeffrey Loria has finally lost it.

Firing and hiring managers like its a yearly ritual is one thing.  Literally taking your right hand man for the job with zero experience is another.

For all I know Dan Jennings will spark the team and be a fine manager.  But why throw a Hail Mary when it's not even halftime yet and so much time is left on the clock?

This team is 16-22 and in need of a new voice.  They have plenty of time to turn things around.  I do believe the talent is there.  The Marlins even said a new voice was needed.  So in typical Marlins fashion (or Loria fashion) they bring in a voice that's always around. The voice who helped build this underachieving and disappointing team.

This is another case of Loria trying to prove to everyone that he's smarter than all of us.  Who knows, maybe he gets the last laugh, like a mad scientist throwing a bunch of things together and seeing what's left after the explosion.

The ironic part is Loria did the right thing.  He had a chance to not only make a splash but make the right move.

Be crazy and hire a Mike Lowell, Pudge Rodriguez, Juan Pierre or another highly respected former player.  Go really crazy and bring in Bobby Valentine or Lou Pinella.  Shoot, bring back Ozzie Guillen.  He's still on the payroll.

Or, go conventional and bring in a Bo Porter, Ron Washington, Manny Acta or Dusty Baker.  Those men have actual MLB managing experience.

Instead, Loria thinks out of the box, which in his case is out of this world.

All along we took guesses on who this hiring could be.  All along we were dumb to even try because we were attempting to do something that is impossible; think like Jeffrey Loria.

When it's all said in done he could have the final laugh and look like some genius.

For now though, we all just laugh.
