Shoulder inflammation had kept Alvarez out of action since the end of May. The 25-year-old was rehabbing in the minors when he experienced additional shoulder pain.
After a 2014 season which saw Alvarez make the All-Star team, the right-hander had a nightmarish 2015, putting up an 0-4 record with a 6.45 ERA.
