South Florida among 9 bidding to host College Football Playoff National Championship

Host communities for 2018-20 games to be decided this fall

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – South Florida is among nine communities bidding to host the College Football Playoff National Championship.

CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said Wednesday that nine communities bidding to host national championship games in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens is competing with Atlanta, Houston and the San Francisco Bay area to host major college football's premiere event in 2018.

Charlotte, North Carolina, Detroit, New Orleans and San Antonio are bidding for the 2019 game, while the new Minnesota Vikings stadium in Minneapolis is bidding to host the 2020 game.

NRG Stadium in Houston and Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, are bidding for all three years. Charlotte, New Orleans and San Antonio are bidding for the 2019 and 2020 games.

The three host communities will be selected this fall.

"We are pleased that the leaders in these communities recognize the significance of the event, and we are excited about what we know will be a competitive bidding process," Hancock said in a news release. "In its first year, the national championship game brought tremendous opportunity to North Texas as the epicenter of college football, and we know that success will continue in the future."

Ohio State defeated Oregon in last season's first-ever CFP National Championship at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The 2016 game will be held at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, followed by Raymond James Stadium in Tampa in 2017.
