University of Miami quarterback Kevin Olsen arrested

Hurricanes backup faces charges of DUI, possessing stolen driver's license

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A University of Miami quarterback was arrested early Monday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence in South Miami.

Backup quarterback Kevin Olsen faces charges of DUI and possessing a stolen driver's license. He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center shortly after 4 a.m. and released on bond later Monday morning.

According to the police report, Olsen failed a field sobriety test. The report said Olsen had bloodshot eyes, his breath smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred. The report also said Olsen "began to tilt and sway forward and backwards."

Police said Olsen also had several identifications with his name on them -- two from Maryland, one from North Carolina and one from his home state of New Jersey. Police said Olsen also had a Florida ID with the name of teammate Ronald Regula on it.

"The New Jersey and North Carolina ones are good, but the Maryland one is fake," Olsen told police, the report said.

Olsen appeared poised to inherit the starting quarterback role for the Hurricanes this year after an injury to projected starter Ryan Williams, but he was suspended for the season opener against Louisville after reports that he failed a drug test.

True freshman Brad Kaaya eventually won the job.

Athletic director Blake James said Olsen was suspended from the team.

Head coach Al Golden said he was disappointed, "but what's of paramount concern right now is just his well being and, you know, helping him through this."

Golden said he hasn't had any contact with Olsen since his arrest.

Olsen, the brother of former Miami Hurricanes and current Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen, had no comment as he left jail late Monday morning.

In an interview with Local 10 News last month, Olsen said he was "confident" in his abilities to be a leader for the team.

"That's why I came here," the redshirt freshman said in August. "You know, I never thought for a minute that I couldn't be the guy."

Olsen was buried as the third-string quarterback on the depth chart behind Kaaya and transfer Jake Heaps. His college career could now be in jeopardy.
