Police: Elderly man shoots at SWAT team

Everardo Hermenegildo Buznego found dead inside home

HIALEAH, Fla. – An 81-year-old man shot at a SWAT team trying to get inside his home after he shot a school crossing guard with a BB gun, police said Wednesday.

The incident began in the 600 block of E. 32nd Street about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when Everardo Hermenegildo Buznego shot the 71-year-old crossing guard, police said. She suffered a minor injury.

Buznego then locked himself inside his home and wouldn't answer the door when officers arrived. When the SWAT team tried getting through the front door, Buznego fired several shots at them, police said.

The SWAT team retreated, then entered the home, where they found Buznego dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police removed his body Wednesday morning.

Police said he had a history of ongoing fights with neighbors but didn't release a motive for the shootings.
