MIAMI – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration retired "Sandy" from its official list of Atlantic Basin tropical cyclones names.
Sandy is the 77th named retired from the Atlantic list since 1954. Others include Irene, Ike, Katrina, Wilma, and Andrew.

Best known as Superstorm Sandy, the cyclone made landfall in Jamaica, Cuba, then hit the mid-Atlantic shoreline.
Sandy caused about $50 billion in damage in the U.S., making it the second-costliest cyclone since Katrina hit the U.S. in 2005.

NOAA will replace "Sandy" with "Sara" beginning in 2018.
