MIAMI -

On this date, a temperature inversion is when the atmosphere near the surface actually rises with height. This type of atmosphere can be very stable and hampers vertical motion. On this date in 1994, a strong temperature inversion occurred over Chicago, trapping carbon monoxide in the pollouted air below the inversion. This resulted in 5,000 false alarms from carbon monoxide detectors.
