Report: Stanton deal backloaded

Star signing 13-year contract

MIAMI – Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton will sign a backloaded 13-year contract, according to an ESPN report.

Jayson Stark reports that Stanton's deal will pay him just $30 million over the first three seasons.

The contract will be $6.5 million in 2015, $9 million in 2016 and $14.5 million in 2017.

Stanton can opt out of his deal in the sixth year of the contract.

If Stanton stays, the Marlins would over him $218 million over the final seven years of his contract.

That would average out to $31.14 a season.

The Marlins have confirmed that the deal will be made official at an 11 a.m. news conference on Wednesday.
