Child hospitalized after being pulled from Homestead canal

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – A child was airlifted to a local hospital Thursday after being pulled from a canal in Homestead, first responders confirmed.

According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, units responded to the possible drowning in the area of Southeast 28th Avenue and Canal Drive.

Homestead police were also spotted at the scene and said the child had fallen into the water.

Sky 10 was above Baptist Health Homestead Hospital just before 2 p.m. as the child was taken out of the rescue helicopter.

Homestead police confirmed that the victim has since been airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.

Back at the scene of the incident, a rope swing could be seen hanging from a tree over the canal. Investigators were seen taking photos of the swing and measuring its distance from the shore.

A vehicle that was left beside the canal was towed away Thursday afternoon.

No other details were immediately released.
